Which Sleep Sack is Best? Benefits, Fabrics & Organic Picks

Which Sleep Sack is Best

If you are a new eco-conscious mom, you may be struggling to find the best eco-friendly sleep sack for your little one.

As a mom, I have searched a lot, and I found some brands who claim they are using natural fabric.

But, this is tricky because they use chemicals inside these fabrics, which make them not organic.

That’s why I decided to write this blog to share my experience and knowledge with you.

What Is A Sleep Sack?

A sleep sack is like a sleep bag, where you can put your babies in to keep them warm and safe.

Personally, I use them in the winter, but I don’t use them in the summer.

As my little one doesn’t like to be covered with any extra layers, she prefers the minimum.

But there are a lot of  babies that do like the sleep sack in the summer too. So don’t take my daughter as a model!

Also, you have to know that using a sleep sack comes with lots of benefits for your baby, so let’s discuss these  benefits below.

What Is The Benefit Of Sleep Sacks For Babies?

There are a lot of benefits for using the sleep sacks for your baby, such as:

  • Ease of use: it’s like the zipper onesie, easy to wear and take off. Which makes the diaper change quick and easy too.
  • There is no need to transition the baby like we do with swaddling, also it can be used for months or years (about 2 or 3 years or even more)
  • They reduce the risk of (SIDF), Reduced Risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome according to CDC, as it keeps the babies on their back.

The right sleep position. Which makes it a safe option for our babies

  • Comfort, it keeps the baby feeling comfortable  and this is an important factor in your baby’s sleep.

If the baby feels comfort he/she will have a deep sleep, especially at night, and this will help you to sleep and take a rest too!

  • They come in many materials, and fit all seasons, so you can use them all the year long. Each season has its own fabric.

And some brands make all-season sleep sack, so you don’t need to buy many for each season.

  • It helps you to create a sleep routine, as they consider a physical reminder for your baby that sleeping time is coming.

And this is SO important to get your baby to sleep deeply, especially at night you have to create a sleep routine.

When to Start and Stop Using a Sleep Sack?

It’s important to follow some guidelines when using the sleep sack..

That’s why many parents ask. When to start and when to stop.

And if the sleep sack is safer than swaddling, so let’s discuss them in detail.

When should you start using the sleep sack?

Sleep sack is the next step after swaddling the newborn, it happens from month 2 to 4, it depends on the baby.

When the baby starts the signs of rolling over, it’s time to transition from swaddling to a sleep sack.

Some moms ask “Is it okay to use a sleep sack on a newborn?”

The initial answer is yes, but you need to consider the right size and TOG.

Is a sleep sack safer than swaddling?

I will answer this question based on my experience and the other moms’ experience.

I tried both of them from day one, I swaddled my baby when she was a newborn.

It worked perfectly for me, as it reduced the startle reflexes.

Many moms, like me, prefer swaddling during the newborn stage.

Also, I used the sleep sack at the newborn stage, but I didn’t like it.

And it didn’t reduce the startle reflexes, “ although I found some moms say that it reduces it”.

Maybe i picked the wrong one, I don’t know, but  i wanted to share my honest review with you.

Overall, I prefer the swaddling in the newborn stage and the sleep sack when the baby has signs of rolling.

At this stage the sleep sacks are considered safer than swaddling.

Because they are designed to allow babies to move their legs freely while still providing a snug fit around the torso.

This helps promote healthy hip development and movement.

After all, if you’re asking like many moms “Is it okay to use a sleep sack on a newborn?”.

Yes, it’s okay, but first make sure to have the right size, and TOG.

When To Stop Using A Sleep Sack For Your Baby?

It’s recommended to stop using the sleep sack when your baby turns about 2 years old.

However, there are some babies who wear it until they turn 4 years old.

And some don’t like it and stop wearing it when they turn 6 months. So, after all it depends on your little one.

What Is The Best Fabric for A Sleep Sack

What Is The Best Fabric for A Sleep Sack?

When you consider the eco-friendly choices for your baby, it’s crucial to buy only organic products that are produced from non-toxic materials.

Since the sleep sacks are a piece of cloth, you have to know what material is best before buying:

Cotton

This is my number one choice, because it’s organic, super soft, comfortable, and not irritating my baby’s skin.

Also, cotton is perfect for the babies who have eczema, as it’s breathable, hypoallergenic, and helps reduce overheating and sweat that can trigger eczema.

Personally, I was diagnosed with eczema 17 years ago, and my dermatologist advised me to only use cotton on my skin.

If I want to wear wool cloth or any other material, it should always be the second layer after cotton to avoid triggering my eczema..

That’s why I choose cotton for myself and added it to my list of organic cotton baby clothes for newborns.

To buy before my little one arrives. It’s a safe and comfy option for both of us!

Bamboo

Bamboo is the perfect option if you have a good budget, as it’s slightly higher than cotton.

But at the same time bamboo is one of the best organic cloth materials.

It has lots of benefits, even more than cotton, for example it’s very soft often compared to silk.

Also it’s naturally temperature-regulating, adapting to different climates.

Plus that it is also recommended for the babies who have eczema as it reduces the risk of irritation and allergic reactions.

Organic Merino Wool

Organic merino wool has been widely recommended for its warmth and temperature-regulating properties, especially in colder climates.

It helps to prevent overheating while keeping babies cozy during sleep. Also it can be pricier than cotton and bamboo.

If you want to consider a sleep sack that is made from organic merino wool, make sure that the material is organic.

Check for baby-friendly certifications and ensure the wool is processed in a gentle, eco-conscious way.

Whatever the material you choose ,just make sure that it’s organic and doesn’t include any toxic fabrics to protect your baby’s skin and the planet too.

What Is The Sleep Sack TOG?

The TOG  (thermal overall grade) is typically used to refer to the warmth rating of sleepwear, there are lots of TOG ratings, it starts from 0.2 to 3.5.

The lower the TOG rating, the lighter the fabric. The higher the TOG rating, the warmer the fabric.

Before buying a sleep sack, follow the TOG guidelines for the brand you’re purchasing from.

To make sure that you have the right one, because it’s a slight different from brand to another.

What Should Babies Wear Under Sleep Sacks?

There is no standard answer for this question, it depends on the weather and the TOG.

But here is the healthy children organization’s advice “you should dress your baby in only one layer more than you’re wearing.”.

And for sure the sleep sack is considered a plus layer. This advice applies to all your baby’s clothes, not just the sleep sack

Personally, I applied this advice to my baby, and it works! She doesn’t feel cold or overheat!

Best Brands For Sleep Sacks

I researched and read many reviews to find the best sleep sack brands, and here’s what I found:

Woolino

This is the number 1 brand for sleep sacks according to many moms.

Especially the 4 seasons ultimate sleep sack, that saves you money, as it’s temperature-regulating.

So you don’t have to buy many sleep sacks with different TOG ratings. Also they use organic materials that are free of fire-retardant chemicals.

Making it the perfect option for many moms who want the best for their babies.

Their average price is high but it deserves it, as most of their sleep sacks are all-season.

Which means they’ll last you the whole year, making it a long-term investment.

Check out Woolino for more info on their organic sleep sacks.

Halo

Halo is the second on my list, I’ve found that many moms prefer this brand for their sleep sacks.

I make it second because not all of their products are organic. They offer a collection of 100% organic cotton sleep sacks.

Which is great for parents who want organic options.

And the good news is that their sleep sacks are cheaper than Woolino.

Plus, some of their products like SleepSack swaddle wearable blankets, are used in more than 1800 hospitals, which give them credibility and trustworthiness.

Love To Dream

Love To Dream is another fantastic option, they are just like Halo, have an organic collection from sleep sacks, made from the highest quality organic fabrics.

Compared to Woolino, Love To Dream’s organic collection is more affordable, offering a great balance between comfort and quality.

It is also slightly more premium than HALO’s organic range, which is more budget-friendly.

But, they have a clearance section on their website, on specific-limited items, which is good, as you can check it to buy what suits you.

Conclusion

So, when it comes to choosing the best sleep sack for your little one, it’s all about comfort, safety, and being mindful of eco-friendly choices.

Sleep sacks make bedtime easier and safer, and they can be a great addition to your baby’s routine.

Opting for organic fabrics like cotton, bamboo, or merino wool ensures your baby stays comfy without exposing them to harmful chemicals.

There’s no one-size-fits-all solution, so trust your instincts and remember to choose the right size and TOG for your baby’s needs.

Whether you go with Woolino, Halo, or Love To Dream, you’ll know you’re making a thoughtful, eco-conscious choice for your baby’s sleep.
