If you’re a new mom wondering what essential organic cotton baby clothes to buy for your little one, you’ve come to the right place!
I’m going to share with you what I found to be must-have items for my newborn, based on my experience as a mom too.
I was struggling to find the best for my baby and I’ve even bought some clothes that are not essential and i didn’t use any of them, and others, I wish I bought more of them.
One thing to keep in mind is that there’s no “one-size-fits-all” when it comes to newborn clothing. Babies come in all shapes and sizes, so it’s impossible to predict exactly how your baby will be
Also, summer newborn clothes are different from winter newborn clothes. But I will give you a hint about this to help you make the right choice for your little one and prepare for all scenarios.

Organic Infant Bodysuits
This is first on my list because they’re so practical and easy to put on and take off.
You will have to change the diaper at least 6 times a day! So having something simple for daytime wear is essential. And the most common question is:
How Many Baby Clothes Do I Need?
Based on my experience, here’s a general guide:
- 4-6 sleeveless cotton bodysuit: don’t buy less than 4, because it’s very important piece.
- Organic cotton short-sleeve bodysuits: The number of these depends on the weather. I suggest around 3 pieces to start.
- Organic cotton long sleeve bodysuit: personally, I didn’t need them in the summer and my baby didn’t wear them even one time, but again the choice is yours, based on the weather, so if you decided to buy it, just buy about 3 pieces will be good at the beginning, and again you can buy more if you don’t do laundry at least twice a week.
Just aim to have about 10 daytime outfit for your baby. If your due date is in the winter, consider purchasing double zipper footed onesies.
So you can buy about 3-4 pieces newborn size at the beginning and after birth buy the rest based on your baby’s size. And if you are in a state that’s so cold, it’s important to add the fleece to your list.
A quick tip: If you’re giving birth in winter, some hooded options are great to keep your baby’s head warm
Cotton pants for infants
One of the most important pieces of baby clothing is cotton pants. Start with newborn-size pants and 0-3 months size..
Because leakage can be quite frequent in the beginning, and you may not know exactly how to manage it, especially if you’re a new mom. So, choose cotton pants for ease.
And the question is, how many pants should you buy at the beginning?
I advice you I recommend starting with 4-6 pants, mixing between the two sizes. Because this is an essential piece of cloth, so you will need it all the time, in winter/fall under onesies and in summer with short sleeve onesies.
Also you will use the pants under the outing wears in fall and winter.
Don’t buy too many or too few! Trust me, 4-6 pants is the perfect number. Babies grow fast, and you’ll need bigger sizes soon enough, so don’t overspend on clothes that will only last 3 months.
Sleep Wear For Baby
You will hear about lot’s of sleeping pieces that you have to buy for you baby, like use sleep sack for naps or get swaddle sack for newborn or baby gowns.
Personally, I think the swaddle is very important in the newborn stage. It helped my baby feel warm and calm, making it easier for her to sleep.
I also used sleep sacks, but I didn’t like them as much. For gowns, I didn’t use it personally, but I heard some moms thanks it and some didn’t like it at all.
The choice is yours, but whatever you choose, you will need to buy about 3 swaddles/sleep sacks/baby gowns, or you can try to mix between them to make your little one feel warm.
Don’t buy too many, though, because they’re mostly needed in the newborn stage to keep your baby feel your warm.
Also you have to take them off during breastfeeding, (during breastfeeding, it’s important you and your baby to touch your each other’s body to increase the milk supply “my lactation consultant’s advice to me”)
So you will have to take them off most of the time for breastfeeding, maybe every 3 hours at least if you are a breastfeeding.
If your due date is in winter, be sure to buy 1-2 blankets to keep your baby warm. If your due date is in summer, you can buy 2 cotton blankets, as you may need them.
As my little one hates blanket, she kick it off with her legs when it touches her body, even if she is full asleep!
Organic Baby Accessories
There are plenty of organic cotton accessories for babies, but you don’t need to buy all of them. It depends on the weather. So let’s break them down:
Cotton Mittens: You can use these in the winter or fall, just aim for about 3 pairs.
Organic Cotton Hats: Babies lose a lot of heat through their heads, so organic cotton hats are perfect for wearing right after birth or on cooler days when you’re heading outside.
These hats will keep your baby’s head warm while still being breathable and comfortable. You can have about 4 cotton hats for your newborn.

Organic Cotton Bibs: This is my favorite piece of cloth and I have about 12 bibs, but you can start with 4-6 bibs, as you will need it in all grow’s stages, newborn and later in the teething stage.
It will keep your baby’s cloth clean and dry from drool, spit-up, and food spills during feeding and teething. Also if you are a formula feeder you will need it each time you feed your baby to keep your baby’s cloth and neck clean.
